SHAPE Performance are based in the North-East of England; but as well as providing services locally, we regularly work across the UK. We provide services for individuals, Schools, grass roots and elite sport. Whether you are trying to improve your sporting performances, or lead a healthy lifestyle we can assist you to reach your goals. Using scientific knowledge to underpin services means fact based support!

The company was formed in 2006, when Tony Dowson (Company Owner) started offering sports science testing and workshops. A lot of this work was in schools and colleges offering exercise physiology testing, using equipment that was usually reserved to elite sports clubs or University research labs. This is something we do but the company has massively broadened the number of services offered.

We regularly work with schools to improve the quality of their PE or sport. This is including workshops to improve the quality of PE lessons, curriculum support, fitness testing and training of pupils ‘showing potential’ in sport or PE (what most people call ‘gifted and talented’), revision classes for GCSE, BTEC or A level PE and playground games training for leaders. We work with several Primary schools providing after-school clubs in a range of sports.

We also offer regular coaching sessions for futsal and football, with a bi-monthly goalkeeper training session, as well as holiday coaching courses.

The following services can be provided by SHAPE Performance:

  • Sport - Coaching courses, fitness testing and training, sports science support, dietary analysis, match or skills analysis, biomechanics, sports psychology.

    Tony Dowson – Company Owner

A self-confessed ‘sports nut’, Tony spent much of his childhood playing sport. Representing the school teams and/or local sports clubs in athletics, cross-country, basketball, rugby, tennis, football and cricket; playing for Durham County in the latter two sports, it was pretty obvious a career in sport would be the chosen path. After obtaining a Sports Science degree from Surrey University (Roehampton University) and a PGCE in PE from Loughborough University he began teaching in 1998. After 4 years of full time teaching, Tony returned to Loughborough and completed a Master’s degree in Sports Science. Whilst obtaining his MSc, Tony also completed the 2-year course in fitness training/strength and conditioning, offered by the Football Association and used his knowledge and experience, to support the England Women’s Football Academy players, whilst working part-time as the S&C coach. Tony has had two games books published; aimed at teachers and coaches - Fun and Games and More Fun and Games were published by Human Kinetics in 2002 and 2004 respectively.

Tony has over 20 National Governing Body Coaching Awards. This is in a range of sports including; trampolining, gymnastics, cricket, basketball, volleyball, tennis, athletics, Olympic weightlifting, badminton and rugby. Tony played semi-professional football for 20 years, has a UEFA B coaching licence, and this is the main sport that he has coached. As well as coaching many successful school teams, running the Gateshead District teams, he has also coached for the Newcastle United and Fulham community schemes. In 2004 he guided Loughborough University Women’s team to the BUSA Championship and Leicestershire Cup (beating Leicester City Ladies in the final). He also helped the team to the 5th Round of the FA Cup, where they narrowly lost 2-1 to Birmingham City Ladies, who at the time were in the Premier division of Women’s football.

Since 2006, Tony has combined teaching and coaching with running SHAPE Performance. In 2016, he started working full-time on the business. He is an associate member/member of the following sports organisations.

    • BASES – British Association of Sport and Exercise Scientists
    • UKSCA – UK Strength and Conditioning Association
    • The FA Licenced Coaches Club
    • IPLA – International Physical Literacy Association
